Give your employees, students, members, or leadership team the opportunity to slow down, try something new, and create a handmade wooden project during an instructor-led wood-burning workshop from MixMatched Creations.

Wood burning, also known as pyrography, uses a heated tool to create permanent designs directly in wood. We bring the tools, wooden projects, practice materials, safety equipment, protective table coverings, and instruction directly to your office, university, conference space, retreat location, or selected venue.

No previous wood-burning, drawing, or artistic experience is necessary.

How the Workshop Works

Wood-burning workshops are approximately two hours long.

We begin with a required safety demonstration and an introduction to the wood-burning tools. Participants learn techniques such as:

  • Creating lines and outlines

  • Shading

  • Adding texture and patterns

  • Creating dimension

  • Controlling the tool’s speed and pressure

  • Safely changing or using different tips when applicable

Everyone receives an opportunity to practice on scrap wood before beginning the selected project.

During the remainder of the workshop, participants work at their own pace while our instructor provides guidance and individual assistance. At the end of the experience, everyone leaves with a handmade wood-burned project and a new creative skill.

Slow Down and Burn the Stress Away

Wood burning cannot be rushed—and that is part of what makes it such an enjoyable and relaxing experience.

The tool works best when participants slow down, use a steady hand, and allow the heat to do the work. Trying to force the process does not make the design appear faster.

Wooden items, sizes, shapes, grain, edges, and styles may vary because natural wood and supplier inventory are not always identical. Available options will be confirmed while your event is being planned.

Everyone Does Not Have to Make the Same Thing

Unlike a traditional follow-along class, everyone does not have to create the same design.

Participants may choose from available stencils, combine different stencil elements, add their own details, or create an original freehand design. Everyone can work at their own comfort and skill level.

Depending on your event, participants may also be able to choose from a small, preselected collection of wooden items. Project choices must be finalized before the event so we can confirm availability and bring the correct quantities, tools, and supplies.

Stencils and Design Assistance

Participants do not need to know how to draw to create something they are proud of.

We provide a selection of stencils and design ideas for anyone who would like additional guidance. Participants can use a stencil as the complete design, combine several elements, personalize an existing design, or skip the stencils and work freehand.

Our instructor will demonstrate the techniques and remain available to help throughout the workshop.

Custom Pre-Engraving

Turn the Project Into a Branded Keepsake

For select projects, MixMatched Creations can laser-engrave a design onto the wooden pieces before the event.

Pre-engraving options may include:

  • Company or university logos

  • Department or organization names

  • Sorority or fraternity letters

  • Employee, student, or participant names

  • Team names

  • Event names and dates

  • Anniversary years or milestones

  • Custom wording

  • A standard design outline

  • Other approved design elements

Participants can add their individual wood-burned designs around the professionally engraved element. This gives the group a shared theme while allowing every finished project to remain unique.

Pre-engraving, personalization, and custom design preparation must be arranged in advance. Clear, high-quality logo or artwork files may be required.

Important Safety Information

Wood-burning tools become extremely hot and must be handled carefully.

All participants must attend the complete safety demonstration and follow the instructor’s directions. Tools must remain in the provided stands whenever they are not being used.

MixMatched Creations may remove a tool or stop a participant from wood burning if the equipment is being used improperly or unsafely.

Participants who prefer not to use a heated tool may request an alternative role or project when arranged in advance and reasonably available.

If alcohol is served, MixMatched Creations may refuse to provide a heated tool to anyone who appears unable to participate safely.

Mandatory Participant Waiver

Every participant who will use a heated wood-burning tool must complete the required waiver before the event.

Waivers must be submitted no later than 48 hours before the scheduled event so all participation requirements can be confirmed in advance. The organization’s event contact is responsible for distributing the waiver link and ensuring that participants complete it by the deadline.

Anyone who has not submitted the required waiver will not be permitted to use a wood-burning tool. Waivers will not be collected or processed during the workshop, and refunds will not be issued for participants who are unable to participate because their waiver was not completed on time.

Completing the waiver does not replace the required safety demonstration. Every participant must attend the demonstration before receiving a heated tool.

Electrical Requirements

Each participant uses an electric wood-burning tool, so the number of people who can wood burn at the same time depends on the electrical capacity of the venue.

Before the event, we will work with your event coordinator or facility contact to discuss:

  • The number and location of electrical outlets

  • The number of available electrical circuits

  • The capacity of those circuits

  • Other equipment using electricity in the room

  • Table placement and room layout

  • Safe placement of extension cords and power supplies

  • Whether participants will work at the same time or in rotations

Outlets located in the same room may still be connected to the same circuit. The venue or facility representative must confirm its electrical setup and approve the use of the required equipment.

MixMatched Creations may reduce the number of tools operating at one time or adjust the event format if the available electrical system cannot safely support the planned setup.

Large Groups and Rotating Experiences

A large group does not necessarily mean wood burning is off the table.

If the venue cannot safely support enough wood-burning tools for everyone at the same time, participants may be divided into smaller groups.

One group can complete the wood-burning portion while another group participates in a different activity. The groups then switch at a scheduled time.

Possible companion activities may include:

  • Follow-along painting

  • Painting a smaller wooden project

  • DIY stained-glass suncatchers

  • Wine-glass painting

  • String art

  • Seasonal craft projects

  • Team-building challenges

  • Collaborative group artwork

Rotating formats may require additional event time, materials, workspace, or instructors. The recommended schedule will depend on your attendance, venue layout, electrical capacity, selected projects, and budget.

Pricing and Project Availability

Pricing depends on the wooden item selected, quantity, group size, customization, pre-engraving, number of instructors, event length, rotation format, material availability, and event location.

Smaller projects such as ornaments, magnets, spoons, and wood rounds are priced differently from larger or specialty items such as cutting boards, Lazy Susans, keepsake boxes, hairbrushes, and plaques.

Additional Facilitators

Additional facilitators may be required based on attendance, selected challenge, venue layout, event format, or project complexity.

Travel and Venue Costs

Travel fees are based on the venue’s one-way distance from Columbia, New Jersey.

Parking, tolls, venue charges, overnight accommodations, and other location-related expenses are additional when required.

Travel pricing includes one vehicle. Larger events requiring additional facilitators, vehicles, or equipment transportation may require an additional travel fee.
