🎨 Beginner Painting Program – Skill Building Foundations

Hosted by MixMatched Creations

Instructor: Jess Rothstein

Location: Knowlton United Methodist Church

Class Time: Thursdays • 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Duration: 6 Weeks

Welcome to the MixMatched Creations Beginner Painting Program, a fun and supportive introduction to painting designed for young artists who are learning foundational art skills.

This program focuses on helping students grow in:

✔ Creativity

✔ Confidence

✔ Following step-by-step instruction

✔ Understanding basic art concepts

✔ Developing early painting techniques

Each class includes guided instruction, hands-on learning, and plenty of encouragement from instructor Jess Rothstein and a classroom helper. All materials are provided.

Students will learn how paint behaves, how brushstrokes change the look of a painting, and how simple shapes and colors work together to create beautiful artwork.

🎨 Skill-Based Class Placement

Our art program uses a skill-based placement system instead of strict age groups.

Artistic ability develops differently for every child. Some younger students may be ready for more advanced techniques, while some older students may benefit from strengthening foundational skills.

Placement is determined through collaboration between the instructor and parents, considering:

• Painting skill level

• Ability to follow multi-step directions

• Attention span during longer projects

• Comfort with basic painting techniques

This approach allows each student to learn in an environment where they can feel confident, supported, and successful while building new skills.

🎨 Weekly Painting Projects

Week 1 – Underwater Movement Painting

In this class, students will explore movement and flow through an underwater scene filled with swimming sea creatures and gently swaying plants.

Students will begin by creating a blended ocean background using vertical strokes to show water movement and depth. They will then add simple silhouette shapes such as turtles, fish, and sea plants.

Skills practiced:

• Showing movement through brushstrokes and shapes

• Understanding foreground silhouettes vs background color

• Building confidence with simple, recognizable forms

• Learning that water can be suggested without painting waves

• Expressive painting without needing fine detail

Week 2 – Moonlit Water & Silhouette Painting

Students will paint a glowing moon and sky, practicing soft blending to create a calm nighttime atmosphere.

Next, they will paint the water using horizontal brushstrokes to show smooth reflections.

Students will finish the painting by adding foreground silhouettes such as grasses or plants.

Skills practiced:

• Using different brushstrokes for sky vs water

• Blending paint smoothly for soft light effects

• Learning that brush direction changes how things look

• Creating simple silhouette shapes

• Understanding foreground vs background

Week 3 – Watercolor-Style Sunset Silhouette on Wood

Students will explore painting on wood instead of canvas, discovering how a different surface changes how paint behaves.

Students will use watered-down acrylic paint to create a glowing sunset background before adding simple silhouette shapes.

Skills practiced:

• Using watered-down paint for soft blending

• Exploring how wood changes painting texture

• Letting colors flow and mix naturally

• Creating contrast with silhouettes

• Understanding foreground vs background

Week 4 – Looking Through the Cave: Framed Landscape Painting

Students will paint a glowing sunset or moonlit scene that appears to be viewed from inside a cave opening, creating a natural frame around the painting.

Skills practiced:

• Understanding framing in art

• Blending colors to create atmosphere

• Using light and dark contrast

• Exploring foreground, middle ground, and background

Week 5 – Moonlight Tree Painting

Students will create a glowing moonlit night sky using circular blending techniques around the moon.

They will then paint a tree silhouette and create star effects using splatter techniques.

Skills practiced:

• Strengthening blending skills

• Learning circular brush motion

• Understanding silhouette contrast

• Building confidence with guided painting steps

Week 6 – Sunflower on Slate: Learning Depth & Overlap

The final week of the program runs 2 hours instead of 1 hour.

Hour 1: Students complete their final painting project.

Students will paint on natural slate, learning how paint behaves on stone surfaces.

Instead of painting a full sunflower, students will paint a section of the flower, learning how petals overlap and how blending creates depth.

Skills practiced:

• Painting on slate

• Understanding overlapping petals

• Blending colors for depth

• Learning how bright colors stand out on dark backgrounds

Hour 2 – Student Art Showcase

Parents and family members are invited to attend a student art showcase where children proudly display the artwork they created throughout the program.

During the celebration:

• Families can walk around and view the artwork

• Students can talk about their creations

• Snacks and refreshments will be available

Each student will receive a Certificate of Completion celebrating their creativity, effort, and artistic growth.

📸 Pictures of each weekly project will be posted soon!
