🎨 Recommended Art Supplies for Home Painting

This page includes the recommended supplies used in MixMatched Creations classes for students who:

• Follow along with our Facebook painting subscription

• Miss a class and want to complete the lesson at home

• Want to continue practicing painting outside of class

The supplies listed below are simple, affordable, and beginner-friendly, and are very similar to what we use in the classroom.

Students do not need expensive art supplies to participate. These recommended materials will work perfectly for following along with our tutorials.

🖌 Paint

We recommend Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint, which is a non-toxic, water-based craft acrylic paint that works well for beginner and intermediate painters.

🎨 Extra White & Black Paint

White and black are used in many lessons for blending, shading, and highlights, so they tend to run out faster than other colors. For convenience, here are links to larger bottles.

🎨 Canvas

Most paintings in our program use 8x10

🖌 Paint Brushes

A basic beginner brush set works perfectly. Look for a pack that includes a variety of shapes and sizes.

Recommended Brush Types:

• Flat brush (for backgrounds and blending)

• Round brush (for details and outlines)

• Small detail brush

🎨 Paint Palette

Students can use a paper plate or if you would like to purchase a reusable palette

Watch this short reel from my Facebook page where I demonstrate how easily the dried paint peels off the reusable palette. Click Here

🧻 Paper Towels

Paper towels are helpful for:

• Cleaning brushes

• Blending paint

• Fixing small mistakes

No special type required.

🧴 Water Cup

A simple cup of water is needed to:

• Rinse brushes

• Change colors

Tip: Use a separate cup that is only used for painting. Disposable cups work great as well.

🧽 Optional Helpful Tools

These are sometimes used in class but are not required:

• Sponges (for texture) Click Here

• Q-tips (for small dots and details)

• tooth brush

🧼 Brush Cleaning – Dawn Dish Soap

For cleaning paint brushes, we recommend using Dawn dish soap. It is one of the best soaps for removing acrylic paint from brushes while still being gentle on the bristles.

Dawn works especially well because it:

• Breaks down acrylic paint quickly, making brushes easier to clean

• Removes paint buildup that can ruin brushes over time

• Helps keep bristles soft and flexible after washing

• Is gentle enough for frequent use

To clean brushes, simply rinse them with warm water, add a small drop of Dawn soap, gently work the soap through the bristles, and rinse until the water runs clear.

Taking a few extra seconds to properly clean brushes helps them last longer and perform better for future paintings.

👕 Protecting Clothing

Acrylic paint can stain clothing.

We recommend:

• Wearing older clothes while painting

• Using an art apron or oversized t-shirt

🎥 Following Along With Online Lessons

If your child is participating in the Facebook subscription tutorials, simply gather the supplies above and follow the lesson step by step.

Students are always welcome to bring their finished paintings to class or the final showcase if they would like to share what they created at home.

Remember — the goal of these lessons is not perfection. The goal is practice, creativity, and building confidence through art.

❤️ A Note to Parents

Art should feel fun, creative, and low pressure.

Your child does not need the exact same supplies used in class to enjoy the lessons. The recommended materials above are simply helpful starting points.

What matters most is encouraging creativity and letting young artists explore their imagination.
