Welcome to the MixMatched Creations Advanced Painting Program, a creative and skill-building experience designed for young artists who are ready to explore more advanced painting techniques and artistic concepts.
This program focuses on helping students grow in:
✔ Creativity
✔ Confidence
✔ Problem-solving skills
✔ Emotional resilience
✔ Real artistic technique
Each class includes step-by-step instruction, hands-on learning, and plenty of encouragement from instructor Jess Rothstein and a classroom helper. All materials are provided.
🎨 Skill-Based Class Placement
Our art program now uses a skill-based placement system instead of strict age groups.
Artistic ability develops differently for every child. Some younger students may be ready for more advanced techniques, while some older students may benefit from strengthening foundational skills.
Placement is determined through collaboration between the instructor and parents, considering:
• Painting skill level
• Ability to follow multi-step directions
• Attention span during longer projects
• Comfort with more detailed techniques
This approach allows each student to learn in an environment where they can feel confident, challenged, and supported.
🎨 Weekly Painting Projects:
Week 1 – Expressive Floral Painting
Students will explore a painterly blended background using vertical brushstrokes to create a soft, expressive wash of color. Students learn how visible brush marks can add mood, texture, and movement to a painting.
Skills practiced:
• Brush control and confidence
• Intentional blending without overworking paint
• Understanding foreground vs. background
• Developing expressive painterly style
Week 2 – Glow & Bokeh Night Ornaments
Students create a glowing background using layered circular shapes to build the illusion of light and depth.
Students will focus on:
• Creating bokeh light effects
• Using light and dark values for depth
• Brush control and paint consistency
• Composition and contrast
Week 3 – Aurora Reflection Nightscape
Students paint a dramatic aurora-style sky using vertical color blending.
Skills explored:
• Directional brush strokes
• Creating contrast with silhouettes
• Painting reflections in water
• Layering color to create movement
Week 4 – Moonlit Blossom – Color as the Statement
Students create a calm background while allowing color and blossoms to become the focal point of the painting.
Skills practiced:
• Compositional balance
• Layering texture and detail
• Understanding reflection and contrast
Week 5 – Aurora Forest Perspective
Students paint a glowing night sky and learn how tree size and placement create the illusion of depth and perspective.
Students practice:
• Advanced blending
• Scale and overlapping shapes
• Creating atmospheric landscapes
Week 6 – Sunflower on Slate: Depth, Movement & Layering
* The final week of the program runs 2 hours instead of 1 hour.
- Hour 1: Students complete their final painting project.
Students create a bold sunflower painting on natural slate, learning how surface texture affects paint application and color.
Skills practiced:
• Painting on non-traditional surfaces
• Creating depth through overlapping petals
• Understanding light, shadow, and movement
- Hour 2: Student Art Showcase
Parents and family members are invited to attend a student art showcase where children proudly display the artwork they created throughout the program.
During the celebration:
• Families can walk around and view the artwork
• Students can talk about their creations
• Snacks and refreshments will be available
At the end of the showcase, each student receives a Certificate of Completion celebrating their creativity, effort, and artistic growth.
This celebration is often a favorite memory for both students and families.
📸 Pictures of each weekly project will be posted soon!
